Issue #1
Piano Lessons in Cherry Hill, Moorestown, NJ.
Getting Unstuck
It's common for piano students at all levels to hit that proverbial wall, the point where you feel you're no longer progressing, even though your piano skills and practice sessions are at a very high level.
If you are currently studying with a piano teacher each week, then you need to communicate your feelings to your teacher, who should be able to help you overcome this obstacle.
For Example
I currently have several students who are at the point in their musical studies where everything from scales to learning new songs has become almost effortless.
Now, most students would say this is a good place to be, and it most certainly is a great accomplishment, however, depending on what you want to get out music, this may be your ultimate goal, or you may be an extremely driven student who has his or her sights set even higher.
What Could Be Higher, You Ask?
If you've spent anytime at all on YouTube listening to other piano players, then there's a good chance that you've come across a performer who is able to make a song really come alive.
If you're asking yourself these questions, then you're probably an extremely driven student who has a higher musical goal, maybe even a higher musical calling. In any case, you want your songs and your playing to stand out from all the others.
THE NEXT LEVEL
You may see yourself as an above average, competent, or even extremely accomplished musician, but you may not see yourself as the gifted musician who can take a song to a whole new level.
Let me repeat, if you know your are a competent musician: If you read sheet music fluently, have good rhythm and can learn songs fairly quickly, then you are ready to take your musical skills to the next level.
So What Exactly Is The Next Level?
I'll dig a little deeper into this subject in next weeks issue of Advanced Piano Technique, but let me just say, for me, as a piano teacher for 25 years and an ongoing piano student for close to 50 years now, music reached a whole new level of enjoyment when I could take any song and do anything I wanted with it...which is what arranging is all about.
This is the part of music that very few piano students ever learn how to do. Unfortunately, very few piano instructors offer piano arranging. I'm one of the piano teachers who does.
My name is Guy Faux. I am the school director and one of the piano teachers here at the Cherry Hill Academy of Piano & Guitar.
I have a waiting list to get on my teaching schedule, but I always leave 1 or 2 openings for advanced students who want to take their playing to the next level.
