Lesson 44
The Chorus to "Lean On Me"
1-5-1 and 1-5-1-3 L.H. Broken Chords

Consistency Wins The Prize!

I tell my students all of the time, "you will accomplish more in 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week, than you will in 25 minutes, 1 day a week".

  • I emphasize this because many of my students have busy schedules and try to cram their practice into one long session every week.

I've said this before, and I'll probably say it again: Learn a little bit each day.

  • Track your progress every 30 days, and every 30 days you will notice your piano skills growing.

And you will amaze yourself at what you'll be playing on the piano this time next year!

Remember, consistency wins the prize!

C Scale & 1-5-1 Broken Chord

Remember, a C major chord is built from the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the C major scale. (see illustration below)

The 1-5-1 broken chord is built from the 1st, 5th and 8th notes of the C major scale.

  • The notes of a 1-5-1 broken chord in C major are C, G and C. (see illustration below)

Remember, the 8th note of the scale is the same as the 1st, so calling it a 1-5-1 is just as accurate as calling it a 1-5-8.

F Scale & 1-5-1 Broken Chord

Remember, an F major chord is built from the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the F major scale. (see illustration below)

The 1-5-1 broken chord is built from the 1st, 5th and 8th notes of the F major scale. Remember, the 8th note of the scale is the same as the 1st note of the scale, just 1 octave higher.

  • The notes of a 1-5-1 broken chord in F major are F, C and F. (see illustration below)

Don't Rush The Process

Don't worry if you don't pick up these left hand broken chords right away.

  • Just keep practicing the left hand exercise from Video 44.4 until these broken chords become second nature.

In fact, the left hand exercise from Video 44.4  should become a regular part of your daily practice sessions.

  • Devote 2 minutes every day to the 1-5-1 broken chord and you will notice dramatic results in 90 days, if not sooner.

And while you are doing that, I will continue to upload lessons showcasing songs that will give you plenty of practice using this amazing musical tool.
